DeChambeau Leads By Four

FAIRFAX – Before this week, Clovis’ Bryson DeChambeau had never seen the Meadow Club, but after his second straight 65 Wednesday, he is feeling right at home. He has a four-shot lead going into the final day of the 110^th Trans-Mississippi Championship presented by TaylorMade-Adidas.

DeChambeau, who was second in last month’s California State Amateur and just finished his freshman year at SMU, has a 10-under total of 130 headed to the 36-hole final day under sunny skies and cooler conditions.

“I put myself in a lot of scoreable conditions today,” DeChambeau said. “I hit 16 greens and made a couple of putts and it turned out to be a good day.”

He had birdies on holes 4-5-7, 10-13-15 with a bogey on the first hole.

Austin Cook, Jonesboro, Arkansas, who finished second in last year’s Trans-Miss is tied for second with first round leader Johnathan Schnitzer, Houston, Texas, at 6-under 134. Cook shot 69 on Wednesday while Schnitzer had a 73 after an opening 61.

“You know what they say about following up a good round with another good ground it’s certainly true. It was a struggle, but I’m still in good position for tomorrow,” he said.

Cal NCAA Champion Max Homa shot a second day 70 after an opening 65 and is one shot back at 135 in third place, five back of the leader.

“Five shots is tough, but I know anything can happen on this golf course,” Homa said of his college home course. “I didn’t putt very good today, but I still have a chance.”

Also tied for third at 135 is USF golfer, Santa Cruz’s Cory McElyea, who fired a second round 73 after an opening 62.

“I expected to get lapped by these guys, but I know there is a lot of golf left. I just have to stay steady,” McElyea said.

Cal’s Brandon Hagy, who won the Golden Bear college tournament here last fall, leads a group of three golfers tied for third with a 71-136 total. Others at 136 include Dallas’ Finley Ewing IV and Trevor Simsby from Carlsbad. Ewing shot 67, Simsby had a 71.

With the wind picking up in the afternoon and the temperature dropping, the par 70 Alister MacKenzie classic played much tougher on day two. The lowest second round score was a 64 shot by Keller, Texas golfer Sean Walsh. Combined with an opening 73, he is currently tied for 9^th at 137.

The course wasn’t too tough, at least for one hole, for Wichita , Kansas’ Alex Carney, who recorded the first hole in one at the tournament. He aced the par-3 8^th hole using an 6-iron from 175 yards. It was his first-ever ace in competition, his second overall.
