DALLAS – One of the Trans-Mississippi Golf Association’s premier events will feature an expanded field and new division this season. Formerly open to the nation’s top senior amateurs ages 55 years and older, including Super Senior (65+) and Legends (70+) divisions, the Trans-Miss Senior & Mid-Master Championship will take place May 14-17 at Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree, Ariz.
The 117-year-old organization’s Board of Directors in February voted to expand the Trans-Miss Senior Championship field to enhance the competition and bring another pure stroke-play tournament opportunity to a compelling demographic. The new “Mid-Master” division allows amateur men ages 40 years and older to compete in the highly regarded, 54-hole stroke play championship.
“This is an exciting move for the Championship,” Trans-Miss Executive Director Rob Addington said. “We want to appeal to the 40-plus demographic. The inclusion of the country’s best middle-aged amateurs will enhance our event, and it puts us on similar footing as other top national amateur events that attract elite mid-amateurs and senior competitors.
In addition to the Trans-Miss Senior & Mid-Master Championship, the association also conducts the Trans-Miss Amateur Championship, a 72-hole competition open to amateurs aged 19 years and older, and the Trans-Miss Four-Ball, a 54-hole team event for amateurs ages 25 years and older that features three divisions (Mid-Amateur, Senior and Super Senior).
“In recent years, we haven’t had a very accessible individual stroke play opportunity for amateurs in their 40s and early 50s,” said Cameron Crawford, Trans-Miss Tournament Director. “We have a group of elite mid-amateurs who compete in the Trans-Miss Championship and a good footprint of mid-ams in the Four-Ball, but the new division in our Senior & Mid-Master Championship will capture another significant number of veteran mid-ams who want to test themselves in a world-class stroke-play event.”
Registration is now open for the Trans-Miss Senior & Mid-Master Championship. Players hoping to gain entry into the field must carry a USGA Handicap Index of 2.0 or better. The entry deadline for exempt players is March 21, while entries will be accepted until May 2. Registration is also currently open for 115th Trans-Miss Championship, to be played July 9-13 at Brookside Golf & Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. Teams also are able to register for the 38th Trans-Miss Four-Ball, set for Sept. 17-20 at Mayacama Golf Club in Santa Rosa, Calif.
The Trans-Miss Senior & Mid-Master is limited to 144 competitors. Four divisions – Mid-Master (40 years and older), Senior (55+), Super Senior (65+) and Legends (70+) – compete from separate tees and yardages over 54 holes of stroke play. A champion is crowned in each division.
