DALLAS, Texas – On another stunning day out at Trinity Forest Club Jason Enloe played another very solid round of golf firing a strong two under par 70 to lead the Mid-Master division by two over 2018 Champion, Chris Kamin of Phoenix Arizona. In the senior division Rusty Strawn of McDonough, Georgia stood strong posting a one-over par round to hold his lead by two over a charging Jerry Slagle. Jeff Burda of La Quinta California took control of the Super Senior division after posting a one-over 73 putting him ahead of Randy King by one. Finally, in the Legends division familiar face Ed Brooks sits atop the leaderboard after a very eventful even par 72.
In the Mid Amateur division, Jason Enloe took sole possession of first place after another day of steller play, posting a round that included seven birdies and five bogeys en route to a two-under 70. The former pro has experience on this course having lead SMU men’s golf program which claims Trinity Forest as the home to the SMU men’s and women’s teams. Enloe himself is a member of the club. “I played well today and gave myself a lot of opportunities for birdies. Playing a tournament on your home course is always fun.”
In the hunt right behind him sits Chris Kamin, who fired a 69 and tied the low round of the day in the division. As you look farther down the leaderboard Jay Livsey of Lakewood Colorado sits three back at even par after two days and Gant Bills sits four back at one over after an even-par day.
In the senior division, the leader in the clubhouse is Rusty Strawn after another solid round this time posting a one-over 73 in what was a much harder golf course on day two as the elements picked up. However, the best round on the course today and lowest round posted throughout the tournament across all divisions went to Jerry Slagle from Southlake Texas who fired a five-under 67 in tough afternoon conditions which vaulted him into a tie for a second place. Slagle who most notably qualified for the US Senior Open in 2018 has posted a couple of solid tournament finishes this year placing solo second at the Golf Week Senior Division Championship and tied for sixth at the Golf Week Senior Amateur.
In the Super Senior Division, Jeff Burda holds a one-stroke lead on Randy King after firing a one-over 73 which included three birdies and an eagle on the tenth hole. Jeff Burda of La Quinta California who played his college golf at Notre Dame has been playing well recently, having won both the Society of Seniors Senior Masters in Indian Wells in California and the GolfWeek Senior Amateur in La Quinta California. I thought the setup was harder than yesterday and we teed off in the afternoon today so it was much windier, Burda said. Jeff will look to add to his 2022 win total tomorrow in the final round as he chases the Super Senior Division crown.
In the Legends Division, Ed Brooks took control of the lead after firing a four-under 32 on the back nine and finished at even par. He currently sits at three-over for the tournament leading Kurt Bernhisel by one after two days. Brooks considered one of the most decorated amateur golfers in the state of Texas is no stranger to winning in the lone star state after capturing the Texas Senior Amateur in 2017 and the Texas Super Senior Championship in 2019. Behind Brooks and Bernhisel is Denny Alexander from Fort Worth posting a two-day score of 6 over par and looking at a three-stroke deficit.
In total seventy-eight, players made the cut throughout the field. The Mid Amateur division shrunk to fifteen and the Senior division narrowed to thirty-nine players. While the Super Seniors decreased to fifteen players and the Legends division to nine.
The first Trans-Mississippi Senior Championship was held in 2000 at White Bear Yacht Club. In 2011, the TMGA expanded the championship to include a Super Senior Division (players aged 65 and older). As the association and event continued to grow, a Legends Division (players aged 70 and older) was added in 2013. Five years later, the TMGA created a Mid-Master Division (players aged 40 and older) and it has continued to attract some of the best mid-amateurs from around the country.
Opening for play in October 2016 Trinity Forest quickly became recognized by Golf Digest as one of the best courses in the metroplex and is currently ranked sixth in the state of Texas overall. The Coore and Crenshaw-designed golf course was built on an old landfill and now displays an extremely firm 165-acre treeless links-style golf course in the heart of Dallas. The golf course will offer the players a new test as they hope to navigate the firm L1F Zoysia fairways and undulating Bermuda greens.
Most notably, Trinity Forest Golf Club has played host to the Byron Nelson Classic, Texas State Open, and Dallas Amateur Championship. In addition, it has become the home of the SMU Men’s and Women’s golf teams and hosted the Trinity Forest Invitational which fields some of the best college teams in the country every year.
