Denver, CO – BYU Cougar senior, David Timmins stellar play continued following up his opening round 63 with a solid 2 under round of 68 to maintain his one-shot lead after 36 holes at the 118th TMGA Amateur Championship. “The course played different this afternoon than it did yesterday, it got blowing pretty hard out there. I felt like I hit the ball fine, I just didn’t hit it as good as I did yesterday”, stated Timmins.
Three players sit just one shot back at -8 including Connor Jones, Harrison Crowe, and Carson Bacha. Crowe carded a 5 under par 65 with six birdies to go with two bogeys and a lone par on his inward nine. Davis Bryant’s six-under 64 moved him up the standings to sit alone at -7 in fifth place. One of the biggest movers of the day included Jeffrey Guan, who tied yesterday’s competitive course record, posting his own 63, moving him into a tie for ninth.
Starting today alone in second was Jiri Zuska who cooled off a bit to card an even-par round but is still in position at -6 and a T6th position. Nine players are within four shots of the lead and twenty-two are within five shots setting up a great final 36 holes.
Once again lightning played a role during the day with a late-round stoppage of play of just over 30 minutes. Only a few groups remained on the course but were able to complete play in sunny conditions.
The cut to low 54 players and ties allowed 59 players at even-par or better to play the final 36 holes. Two Mid-amateurs made the cut with Joe Neuheisel in contention at 4 under and Samuel Jones at even par through 36 holes. Play will commence off both #1 and #10 tees starting at 8:00 AM in the morning.
Denver Country Club has hosted several TMGA Championships through the club’s distinguished history including the 2010 Championship. Players have been treated to wonderful course conditions and exceptional hospitality by the membership at the club. Over 80 club members are volunteering for the event by providing host housing, spotters, and scoring for the championship. The course plays just over 7000 yards, par 70 with today’s average score of 71.5.
